Hello! My name is Jennifer Blondin and I am an animal lover! I live with my boyfriend Richard and our many pets. We have 3 dogs: Brandi-A 2year old Spayed female Ridgeback Mix, Tommy-A 6 1/2 year old Neutered Male retired Greyhound, and Shady-A 4 month old Neutered Male Australian Shep./Bulldog mix who has epilepsy. We also have four ferrets; Babie, Sweetie, Rambo, and Ranger, and we still have more! We have a Blue Crown Conure named Jasper and two Cockatiels; Paco & Tabitha. This is my first attempt at a web page, so you will have to bear with me on this, but I am hoping to offer you (the pet owner) some helpfull tips and suggestions on the inportance of responsible pet ownership. Rabies is not only a threat to your pet, but to you as well. A fatal, viral disease, rabies affects the brain and nerves. The main source of rabies comes from infected wildlife, such as foxes, racoons, skunks, bats, and coyotes. Usualy transmitted through bites from rabid animals, rabies can also be spread through contact with broken skin. The most common sign of rabies is an unexplained change in behavior. A friendly pet may turn aggressive or act strangly with no apparent cause. However, a wild animal may act tame and not be afraid when approached by people. It is important to know that once a rabid animal starts to exhibit abnormal behavior, it will continue to do so. It may take two to six months before showing signs, but once it does, it is an irreversible process, and the animal will die in a matter of days. Today, no treatment for rabies exists. If you ever think that one of your animals may have rabies, be extremly careful and avoid all contact with it. Isolate the pet from other animals and humans and call your veterinarian immediately. The doctor will need to know wether your pet has been vaccinated. By law, you must report this disease in order to protest the public. Notify both your veterinarian and animal control. The best protection for your pet is an annual rabies vaccination. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
